“The Waning of Apollo” by Jason Lee Miller

Morning comes too soon
A selfish lover
Reminds me of Arianna Huffington
Telling graduates to sleep their way to the top
Not that I think of her in that way
Often

This is sleep logic
No-coffee logic
Post-late-night-discussions-of-sexism logic
Pre-work-on-Saturday-to-be-a-man logic

The last thing I thought of before going to sleep was:
What happened to the Minoans?
As if there might really be an answer among
Long-sleeping goddesses and the rise of Apollo

No time for it now
Just appointments hanging heavy in the near future
And the soothing of lunchtime NPR stories
A dance recital later, my proud daughter clamoring for more stage time

When the sun sets, she’ll shine on
Midnight oil burning
