“Forgiveness” by Nettie Farris

The fluorescent lighting of the oper-
ating theatre forged your left earlobe.
Cold water formed the lining of your lungs.
A skinned knee on the macadam sculpted
your nasal passages. Your kindergar-
ten teacher, and her scolding tone, her ex-
acting eye, produced your spinal column.
Your father offered all twenty-four ribs.
Your former lovers contributed your
pelvic arch. Through your former bosses, you
earned your stomach, your liver, and your intes-
tines, both large and small. Your college
degree granted you occipital lobes.
Forgetfulness graced you with a large heart.
