“in the sticky of the day” by Elizabeth Kilcoyne

you rolling a cigarette
nicotine stained lighter squint
pursed lips and yellow hands

me with the bubble wand
i imitate your shade
polluting the air in my own way.

smoke pours off your lips
like the mountain sheds heat
the clouds their rain

while i cast lazy rainbows
hot like glowing oil slicks
to pop against your sunburns

when you grin it’s all humidity
the sweet sick after banana pudding
cream on the tip of my tongue.
