“Ars Poetica” by Jennifer Beckett

In 1981, at fifty pounds of fear
and hope, his timid toes gripped
cement until he listened to his will,
immersing flesh, soul into pools,
advancing to rapids, oceans.

Voices nagged
It’s time to come out of the water.

He obeyed.
He flew around the whole world.
He traversed continents.
He walked into flames.
He thirsted.
