“CROWNS” by Melva Sue Priddy

I’ll sit in the dentist’s chair
the grinding, splashing, prying,
the pop and snapping of a new crown
being prepared; some voice will keep saying
Relax; it will soon be over; relax, this is not
the chair of your youth where the old
man reeking of bad vodka would
work with your teeth, you less
than a horse—no numbing.
But Sister, I’ll have to say,
this is what has kept you alive—
all that pain working it’s way out from the center
where the natural progression of a fester is to
come clean & pure again.  Sister,
only a sociopath wants pain for you.
Some of this you must close
your eyes and sit through.
