“To Myself, From Myself” by Morghan Fuller

Before you fall in love,
I need you to tell me who you are.
Could you write a list of what you stand for, and what you don’t?
Could you tell me right now who you would take a bullet for?

Find a picture of your six year old self,
And look into her eyes.
What parts of her are still in you,
And what pieces have the years broken away?

When no one is looking,
What expression is most often on your face?
Can you remember the last time your eyes lit up,
Or have they been this dark for a long time?

When you remember what it feels like after writing a great poem,
Or listening to a song with lyrics that have been written for you,
When it’s three a.m. and you’re laughing with someone who loves you,
Do you realize that you are stronger than ever

Sometimes being alone is a gift to your broken places,
Because you learn what you need to heal them.
You cannot give yourself away,
Until you know what you have to offer.
