“The Iron Contemplates Her Steam” by Teneice Durrant Delgado

They told us stories, those jealous
blenders and crock pots, about how hard
we would work, but I could hear the jealousy
in the gape of their mouths. An endless
parade of cloth, they said. Cotton, linen, poly blend-
mind the zippers, the button-fly, a setting
for each- spending most of your days
horizontal, they tsked. We are expected
to heat up fast and stay hot, but never
ever burn. Our best work is the knife-sharp
crease from crotch to ankle.
