“No Poem Tonight” by Rae Cobbs

I’m full: homemade tacos
in the back yard. Three months
abstinence and I ate bananas
and chocolate. Fireflies in
numbers. Winter clothes bagged.
Summer clothes down from
the closet. Tomorrow I should
have some money. I remember
swimming, being thin enough
to wear a bathing suit without
clenching my jaw and ignoring
how I feel. I can feel the water
of every pool where I played.
I can see my father’s face.
It’s so summer, I can feel
the ocean on my ankles, taste
grilled corn and watermelon—
juice is dripping down my wrists.
In the dark, the day done,
I love myself as much
as I’ve ever loved anyone.
