“CELEBRATING THE START OF SUMMER,
AFTER FLOWERING CHERRY WITH POEM SLIPS, c 1675″
by Melva Sue Priddy

Black beauty zucchini, burgundy bush beans
pink brandywine, Amish paste, Cherokee purple,
patty pan squash,—a riot of yellow-burgundy-white
blossoms dripping in the sun-green wash anchored
firmly in brown soil where feet pad between rows.
Charlotte swiss chard a visual play
of red and emerald interspersed with light.
Sunflowers jumping half a foot each day
towering over the tomatoes and knobby kale.

We come to this place
from different directions
and hang our poems
bursting with promise
in the golden air between
our bodies, ephemeral
narrow strips of energy,
just for the beauty
and pleasure of life.
