“My Words” by Kevin Blankenship

I walked along a city street,
New York, Gotham, a flash of lights,
Rain, sea spray from the pier.
Though the lights shimmered
Dancing to the tunes of thousands of people,
Voices rising into the night like fireflies
My words were not there.

I walked along the River Thames,
London Bridge, a quiet country churchyard,
Centuries of moments hanging like mist.
Though the river danced,
Though the church spoke with thousands of voices,
Lifted in prayer like the drift of smoke,
My words were not among them.

I walked along the Rough River,
Gurgle of water, river stone,
Spray of redbuds through the air.
In that moment, a voice,
Like lightning off the rolling hills,
Speaking in the drops of dew off dogwood flowers,
I found my words.
