“Good Fences” by Kevin Blankenship

Frost said,
“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,”
Also “Good fences make good neighbors.”
We make good fences,
Ones that run with barbs,
That rend and tear skin.
Ones that shut out, close off,
You are different, I am not.
Ones that mark out spaces,
This land is my land,
This land is not your land.
Something out there does not love a wall,
Cries out to be together,
But Frost knew,
In that dour New England way,
One thing we do well, above all else,
Is put up fences.
