They don’t tell you that you’re a sacrifice.
You are just left in the cold Wisconsin woods
covered in gashes and a warm bath of your own
blood. At twelve, I’m learning that most forms
of religion make offerings. Everyone wants to
ascend and transcend the earth. I’m learning
bigger words every day. Today, I watched a
Disney movie with my dad and counted all of my
stitches, all of the pills for the pain,
all of the white nonpareils on a piece of candy.
Today, I thanked everyone who sent me letters
in purple crayon hearts on the internet. I
haven’t abandoned the thought that people are
basically good, even if I read about another
girl who attacked her mom with a knife in the
name of modern urban legend. I don’t have the
time to hate Anissa and Morgan. I have steps to
learn again, breath to draw in without shuddering.
