Pavlov’s Show

It had something to do with saliva
and ringing bells, dogs trained
to react to stimuli unconnected
outside of the experiment
to their responses.
Hear bells. Salivate.

Our firstborn watched no
television until it became a potty
training reward, but then it didn’t work
for her. Too much bladder control,
it seemed. Now underwear-clad, she
gets a cup of milk upon
waking, and again after quiet time,
both times watching a single
show, Dinosaur Train, Dora, Diego, Doc,
alliterated viewing of 23 minutes apiece.

Her younger sister woke early this
morning, hair wild, diaper full.
“Milk,” she says, barely verbal, sort of
sounding like “moak.” “Moak,”
she says again, walking
to the couch, sippy cup
in hand, she sits, waits, points,
“show.”

I first thought I was back in the classroom, but was relieved to discover that I was taken into your life where your family shapes your days while you shape words and canvas into art.
