Women Waning Gibbous

Like any celestial body, I know
when to bow out,
when to leave ‘em wanting more.

I have seen Mars up close
glow amber in spring.

I can name the rings
of Saturn by heart.

There is only so much
I can do and say
in so little time.

I know when to take my leave—
when to inch towards the curtain
amidst the muted applause
of night-crawlers and asteroids.

I do not tremble at the ebb
of my own bright pulse.

What future is there
to fear for one such as I?

I have known the company
of women, the onslaught
of oceans.

This way, each time
I return only to retreat,
I remember I am just one
more version of them—
tide collapsing
into tide.

I was once told never to use I in a poem if I could avoid it. That “advice” haunts me everything I try to write. You are living proof that that person was wrong; your words are a panacea to my pain. Thank you.

Ugh, I hate advice like that. I am largely self taught so I tend to break a lot of “rules.” The thing is even if you aren’t writing from “I” it is assumed you are, particularly in second person, and when you use first person it can come to represent multitudes. Looking forward to your own “I” moments!

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. But think about if you added some great pictures or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and video clips, this site could definitely be one of the greatest in its niche. Terrific blog!
