sweet momma’s-milk breath,
hint of amniotic salt still clinging
to your black angora hair.
I stroke the flawless silk
of your skin, touch tender lips
to the creamy curve of your cheek.
I love the way you fit
into the crook of my arm;
how my body heats yours,
limp with sleep and dreams flashing
behind half-closed lids, smiles
flickering at what visions?
I love your demanding cry,
the next voice ina long line
of strong-willed women
who are saving your place.

Now I can see why you are able to get this down–I thought you were visiting your first memories of your own child, which of course you are. It was not so much the work and demands that silenced me during my children’s birth, but the overwhelming sense of more experience than I could mark off and separate. Those feedings started my poetry! Great wakefulness!
I wasn’t writing poetry when I had my children. Holding my new granddaughter re-awakened so many emotions – that instant love & protectiveness! It was so overwhelming that I couldn’t write about it for months. And then the poem just poured out of me!
& growing strong because of the mother’s strength and understanding, as well as connections to the past…

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone! 967978
