“The Angel of Bathroom Graffiti” by Jeremy Paden

early on grew tired of telephone numbers
still has a soft spot for puns on names
for witticisms and foreign phrases

like the grotesque and obscene figures
on the underside of medieval choir seats
it understands its holy task

to watch over humans in their most
animal of acts, to be with them
in the shit and piss of life

to the surprise of the Angels
of Platonic Love and of Cartesian
Logic it is counted among the wisest

they do not understand its love
of broad humor or how the guffaw
of a dirty joke is life calling to life
