“Why Should I Not Love a Woman” by Rae Cobbs

In stillness, dawn regains sidereal Earth.
From high above the plains, I’ve seen the sun
shake stars out from the sky in bending brush.
At desert altars, bathed in ancient light
I’ve taken to the ground in wonder; I
have loved this planet in its strange machine.

In yearning for reflections of the moon
I sank into the blackness where the lake
absorbed the night. In pages where so many
draw their souls, in seeking, I have traced
a consciousness in common, quiet song.

In space minute as a trapped fly, I’ve watched
the iridescence shine, so why should I
not kiss the one who rests beside me, here,
embrace relief in her abundant love?
Invisible, the tender wheel moves all
that wait to witness energy in praise.
