“Chipmunk: after a study of John Clare” by Matthew Haughton

Though he be unafraid of thorns,
my shadow across his back
sends him into the bush to stay.
As if I were his mortal enemy,
and the heart of that thickened
space his own little monastery.
The shinny beads of his eyes
quiver as they gaze at my feet.
