“Ode to the Semicolon” by Deborah Cooper

I have loved for so long the beauty
mark above your curvy lower lip
Loved your soft eye, a bullet, over your dimpled chin
Wanted to cup your comma,
bring it to my breast

What life force can separate two vital thoughts?
Who is so strong?
What boundaries you set when you are introduced!

Oh, semicolon! From the pages of Jonson
and Shakespeare
you have meted out rhythmic patterns,
brought lover to lover
with your passionate éclat

Some call you old-fashioned, middle-class.
Some say you are even ‘optional.’
I find you seductive,
dangerously addictive,
a
mysterious
pause.
