“Resemblance” by Beatrice Underwood-Sweet

My Great Aunt Bonnie
who has outlived two husbands,
a stroke, and has an aneurysm
bulging in her brain
lives alone at 83 years old.
A post-it note by the door reads
DNR
She brings out a basket of photographs
of her senior center activities,
relatives long-dead,
and sepia-toned snaps
of a past version of herself.
I look for some similarity
to my grandmother’s little sister
but see nothing of myself in the faded photos,
yet I hope I will resemble her
when I reach her age.
