“Severance” by Katerina-Stoykova-Klemer

all morning he’s got nothing
to give, and you, who want it

circle him like a cat
waiting for food until

he firmly staves off
your pushy wet nose,

fades
through the open door.

of course you, too,
are free to go,

but don’t.
instead you perch

on the shell
of his empty coat,

split open your beak
and shriek

a heartbreaking
mating call.
