“IRISES” by Bront Davis

Three cut irises
Stand in crystal
Alone on the kitchen table

Droplets of water
Cling to the inside of the vase

All I did was turn the vase
So that the lavender and yellow
And finally purple
Of the petals could
Catch the sun

And only then
Thus illuminated and translucent
Rippled by the sunlight traveling
Through the maple tree’s new foliage

Was I able to hear the birds
Singing the morning
