“Alive in the First House” by Robin LaMer Rahija

I bring my brother groceries.
He lives in the forgetful garden.

We are kissed and rekissed
by fruit flies as we sit.

Brother    I say    every body
you pass is as beautiful as yours.

Every shoulder is a snow cap
every collar bone an ice-cream cone.

Reach out     brother     grab
the lettuce carry these bags

up these stairs carry
my inconsistent concern

on your pinky finger.
I am a little afraid of you    brother

because the size of your hands
and the height of your head.

Our love is a vertical line
with a vanishing point unseen.

This sexual dimorphism
a natural habit governing

our every interaction.
Your eyes see only the canopy.

Brother    find yourself
a woman or a man so I may

forget this undergrowth I sow.
I sort of know best for you

as I sort of know best for everyone
far from me geographically.

We are beasts in the garden
unnamed and unfanged.

We live in a swamp
that swallows the wolves.
