“Invitation, No Regrets Accepted” by Karen George

~ “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” —George Eliot

Look behind the velvet veil,
peer into the dark,
and when your eyes adjust,
enter the estuary
of your other selves.

Feel the wings emerge
from your shoulder blades,
how they unfold and lift,
flicker against your throat
like a Luna moth.
When the ceiling peels away,
hoist for the heavens.

Earth pulses below you
as you orbit with the moon
until you no longer repel
the pull of Spain,
Jerez de la Frontera,
where you will become
a flamenco dancer.
Savor how your frame elongates,
blood refines,
pulse vivifies.
