At the gym, my ex won’t stop commenting

on my technique. My arms are spread

 

shoulder length, shaking,

legs straight and I’m on my toes.

 

My fingers spread wide on the mat,

arms parallel and strong.

 

Doing exactly what he’s doing.

my back so flat it hurts,

 

keeping my core tight,

and he’s saying “my form is wrong,”

 

all wrong because my arms aren’t parallel

and this was how he was taught in gym class.

 

It’s the first time I’ve done planks in years

but I especially don’t need someone telling me

 

I should do girl planks like in high school

when I’m a grown woman…

 

I told him to shut up and to focus on himself

and let me do this on my own.

 

He won’t stop telling how he’s just trying to help

and that he knows how to do it right

 

and that I should be grateful.

I said I was done and wanted to go.

 

He gives me my stuff from his pockets and says,

“You should be lucky I even give you the time of day.”
