“When Superman Stops Flying” by Kevin Blankenship

When the lips that always said,
“I love you daddy,”
Like a sweet spring wind across
The blowing dogwoods

Instead say, “You don’t understand,
You’ve never understood me,”
And the world spins a bit on its axis,
Tilts a little sideways,

People will say,
“They’re just growing up,
It’s natural, they’ll come back around,”
But I know

This is the day when
Superman stops flying,
Is just another man with a tired cape
And a worn-out “S” here on the ground.
