As part of our “Meet a Bulgarian Poet” series, Katerina Stoykova-Klemer interviewed poet and linguist Rossen Karamfilov, one of the brilliant voices featured in The Season of Delicate Hunger: Anthology of Contemporary Bulgarian Poetry. Here is a translation of that interview.
What would you like for the American readers to know about Bulgarian poetry?
Bulgarian poetry has been developing in a different way throughout the years. In my opinion, we have very good authors who possess poetic voices powerful enough to be heard and understood correctly by the audience.
What would you like for the American readers to know about you personally?
I am a person who is moved by very few things in life—love, writing and music. These axioms support my day-to-day living. I bow before literature that has value.
this poem is dedicated
to that 1% grief
I keep secret
and which now melts
at the bottom of my glass
it’s dedicated
to the collapses and the surges
to the sighs and the orgasms
to our light and dark selves
to my father’s absence
to the bottle of Captain Morgan
which is never the same
to this unfathomable narcotic
world chosen by me to be born into
to my friends who are
my spine in the truest sense
and to poetry which taught me
to be insubordinate to loneliness-Rossen Karamfilov,
translated from the original Bulgarian
by Katerina Stoykova-Klemer
Is there an American poet who has influenced you or has made an impression on you? How do you interact with American poetry?
There are many, but I was most crushed when I read Allen Ginsberg, Walt Whitman and E.E. Cummings. Monstrous poets.
What forms of cultural exchange between Bulgaria and the U.S. would you find interesting, practical and helpful?
It would be wonderful if Bulgarian artists more often had opportunities for showcasing their art to the outside world. Ultimately what goes through the heart is the most important; it is what’s worth noticing even in complete darkness.
What do you wish for the anthology and its readers?
Between the covers of this anthology there isn’t a single page which doesn’t carry its own weight and its own message. I wish for the readers to sink in between its covers and carefully decipher it. It will respond in the same way.

I think everything posted was very reasonable. But, what about this?
suppose you wrote a catchier post title? I mean, I don’t want to
tell you how to run your website, however what if you added a title that makes
people desire more? I mean “…Even in Complete
Darkness”: Rossen Karamfilov on American and Bulgarian Poetry | Accents Publishing Blog is kinda
plain. You should glance at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they write article headlines to grab people to
open the links. You might add a video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about what you’ve got to say.
Just my opinion, it might bring your website
a little bit more interesting.
