“Body Language” by Christopher McCurry

I tell her it’s a penis
and cover up with a towel,
embarrassed by her
two-year-old gaze.

Penis she repeats,
stepping forward
pulling on the towel
like it’s just another shirt

and underneath
is just a different
kind of bellybutton
or nipple even.

I think if I keep it hidden
what monster
will it become
in her imagination.

And if I let her look
what monster
am I
in yours.

Really strong social commentary–careful and precise use of language to make the point. Great piece!
