you started writing
because it’s easier
than learning to paint.

easier to tuck secrets
into lined paper
than to let pigment sing them
onto white canvas
with nothing to hide.

so write the strands of hair torn out
the toothsore and the jaw bruised
flesh caught under the nail bed
the scratches along the upper thigh
the rust on the bedroom wall.

write your body as it softens
as it widens, as hips blossom
and start to bleed. metamorphosis
doesn’t mean growing wings.
in this way butterflies are cruel.

write the girl splitting you open
at the spine to climb inside you,
who traces your shoulder blades
as if praying that something sweet
might fold open at a feather touch.

write the boy planting flowers
in the holes she left behind
like morning glory could make
adequate sutures for someone
coming apart at the seams.

don’t just sit there open-mouthed
without words pouring out.
you know better
than to ask stupid questions.
you know that bandages
are worn to stop the bleeding.
