“The Art of War” by Michelle Benningfield

he cannot fight what he cannot see or hear
he cannot fight what does not fight in the open field
but darts like a ghost
behind and between barricades of silence
built with bricks of                  nothing
.                                  never mind
.                       whatever
this weakens and confuses the opponent

catapult dishes into the sink
the house shakes with
cannons of footsteps

the rat a tat tat
of his verbal operation
falls like empty shells
against the boom
of the bedroom door.
