“And When She Tasted of Knowledge, Her Eyes Were Opened” by Allie Marini Batts

More bitter than the half-bitten worm,
threading out of fruitflesh
was the stark realization that the worm
was the least of her worries:
not only was this apple forbidden,
and riddled with worms,
but the heady sugar
of its overripe meat
was a mask for the rot
lurking beneath
its bright skin,
and the poison beneath that,
swelling her throat shut
.          hive
.                        by
.                                  sweet
.                                                hive.
