“Canary” by Nettie Farris

Yellow is the color of the month come
spring, and you did not expect this, this sud-
den awakening from the dead, the dead
of an austere debilitating win-
ter. However, daffodils and narcis-
si surround you. Buttercup crosses your
lips daily. You find yourself willing to
lay down your weapons to any man in
a saffron tie. The wood poppy becomes
your best friend, and you are enamored of
daisy and sunflower, but you begin
to resent this. You begin to wish for
something blue to mute this flame; cornflower,
for example, or blue hydrangea.
