He does not count the dark days,
hurricanes weathered in ships
riddled with wood boring clams,
the long nights stuck in doldrums
under a sky filled with new stars,
years waiting for audience,
the ridicule of sages,
the dank hull, the manacles.
He knows the patient lover
will be rebuffed, the hero
will be given labors
to prove his love, seduction
is an art of endurance.
He knows what he has to lose
is life itself, he has lost
already titles, land, and gold,
the ocean sea belongs
to others now. The Captain,
a man of Christian faith, turns
to the heavens for succor,
not with prayer but science:
Bring us roasted cassava
and I will pray to God
that when he eats the sun
he will be kind and not keep
it in his belly long.
-Jeremy Paden
Another good one — the pairing of seduction and succor makes sense but I’d never have thought of it.
I like these captain poems. One of my favorite books is Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin.
Thank you both. I do like Darwin’s book, and might call on it for images. :)
you write for all the captains. no small feat, as there are billions of us.
