“Poets” by Rudy Thomas

Before daylight he sang
from the maple into clear sky
outside my bedroom window.

I have no way of knowing
how far away the female was
or if she heard him at all.

Lying there alone, you were all
I thought about. At once the finch was
silent. 5 days ago as you were going

away, you turned toward me. So,
you whispered when I return, I
will be your lover if you pang

for me.
