They are not cute,
Not cute at all!
Eating my sunflower seedlings,
My blooming cucumbers.
Encumbering my life
With holes the size of baseballs
In my newly sodded yard.

At first I had a heart –
A ‘hav-a-hart.’ Trapped
and drove the little bastard eight miles
out of town
only to have a hawk swoop down.

Poison peanuts?
A water bucket with floating seeds?
Jif baited rat traps?
My hunter-husband in full camo
Lying in wait with a howitzer?

I wonder if the hawk hires out?
