“Animal Abodes” by Karen George

Last night I watched “Nature,”
homes animals build
with the only tools
their own bodies.

The swift slicks saliva on cave walls
to form nests for a single egg, only
to have it snatched
for egg-drop soup.

With its teeth the beaver bores
into a trunk until it leans,
lets the wind and tree’s weight
bring it down.

The prairie dog digs a tunnel,
distinct rooms to birth, eat, sleep,
and an owl becomes a squatter
in one of the chambers.

There is so much
beauty to learn.
The older I get,
the less I know.
