“Insignificant in this World” by Jude Lally

mind trapped in a myriad of memory
two boys’ home martyred by broken bonds
mom determined to make it on own

five-year-old shoeless summer
feet as black as brief boyfriends
blistered by older cousins coming

—brief reprieves before roads of annihilation—

to sit stirring discord screaming at neighbors
smoking despite pleas please outdoors only
then in one instant incident raised reluctance

whether said hands were secure safety nets
nights out exploring streets wrought with open
wounds though scabbed healed scars remains
