“The Captain Wonders Why The World Has Turned Against Him” by Jeremy Paden

He was the chosen one who sailed across
the ocean sea and slew the dragon
the rending of a veil revealing wonders

But with the stories of anthropophagi
and dog-tailed humans, of innocents naked
and unashamed in how freely they gave

Came stories too of tyranny and lies
though kings and queens and captains understand
the mutiny of men who only scrub the deck

The need to keep state secrets in log books
others cannot read, even how a leader
sometimes harvests what he has not sown

The midnight sighting of land, the paltry sums
of gold, reports of avarice so strong
that hands are severed and children fed to dogs

How quickly the heart in search of only gold
turns to violence but he was the chosen one
what obstacles there were were simply Satan

Aren’t those touched by God for great deeds
given greater freedoms, isn’t everything
in the way of greatness just another name for sin
