“You give me” by Rudy Thomas

You give me impulses
& I turn them into words
placed one after the other
along a line.

You give me control
of my feelings & I turn out
more lines down the page
until I have a stanza.

Even now in the dark,
my quickened imagination,
the medium of poetry,
takes powerful hold of me.

In the quiet & lonely solitude
of my room, my longing
surrounds me with a clarity
that is you.

If there is a fine art of passion,
you impassion me. This poem is
your body & the highest
& the lowest of my being.

It is my spent desire, my care
& my fear, the twin spheres
of my sensuous perception
& of my feelings.
