“ALTHOUGH I’VE HAD PLENTY FRESH FROM THE GARDEN ALL WINTER AND SPRING or LOSS” by Melva Sue Priddy

with a knife, I walk
the row of leeks
which overwintered
and over reached their tenderness,
blooms bursting with oniony scent
and sweet flavor, white and purple orbs
from two varieties. I sever
seven opened orbs at chest height
to collect in a colander.
Later a resting firefly and
spider will escape under the running
tap water. Eventually I’ll chop
the blooms for use in soups
and green salads. But first
I’ll lose the firefly
trying to catch the spider.
