“Fall Plots, Hills Feed & Seed” by Karen George

.          ~ In memory of Clara Scheper, 1906-1993

I feel the warm press of Grandma as I slide
the metal scoop into bins, collect gnarled knobs,

drop them in the paper bag she holds
open as she warns, Don’t touch the hyacinths

with bare skin. You’ll itch for weeks.
The sweet scent of wood shavings

and dark musk of bulbs bathe me
as I sound their dreamy names:

Firetail daffodil, Flavescens iris,
Spaendonck tulip, Excelsior lily.
