“First and Last” by Jude Lally

Stranger: What do you do?
Me: I write.
Stranger: Who do you write for?
Me: Myself.
Stranger: Yourself?
Me: And whoever wants to read it.
Stranger: What do you write?
Me: Poetry mostly.
Stranger: And this is how you make a living?
Me: Not exactly, the living part comes unconditionally.
Stranger: What I meant was, where do you work?
Me: I work from home.
Stranger: So what is your job?
Me: My job is to keep on living.
Stranger: To keep on living? What kind of a job is that?
Me: It’s a full-time job.
Stranger: Humph. I don’t understand.
Me: Neither do I.
