Pull back language,
don’t stop at the skin,
dig in again
and again with pen,

peel off the dermis
and find the permanence
of blood, of bone,
of present tense.

Set fire to the iron,
cauterize the damage.
Wave smoke from the ashes,
feel the burn of satisfaction.

My friend Joshu could tell
his life story
from one of your scars.

Begin, simply, with a single scratch.
