“Scission” by Pam Gibbs

So much depended on the hand of a girl–
eyes closed, finger on a map,
bus schedule, emptied bank account.

She could not divine
the consequence of choice,
only recognized the intolerable.

Perhaps the mystic knows
whether she chose wrong, or not at all,
stood still, severed from herself.
