June 17 poem by Teneice Durrant Delgado

There is a girl, actually
a woman, though
it is hard to tell
from this distance. Not important,
really. At first, you mistake her
for some kind of aphrodite, emerging
from the churning surf,
a little coy in her obvious
effervescence, however,
she is actually digging her heels
into the shoreline, the waves tugging
at her tired legs. She doesn’t want
to give up. She is not
a girl. She is not anyone
you know.
