“Grace” by Marta Dorton

brick by brick
they shored us up
every prayer
phone call
text
visit
book
bread

I woke
from random thoughts
to midnight tests
conferences
visitors
breath

my son
far adrift
white linens beige walls
blue specked gown
lax limbs tethered
to metal rails
tubes
fluids
needles
constant
interruption

surrounded
by love
random acts of prayer
kind thoughts
good deeds
pushed us up
outpourings absorbed
into our polar senses

acceptance
strength
love
at a time
I thought I’d feel
total
devastation

a sturdy foundation
of shared hope
raised us above
dark umber’s
deepest depths
