Poem 22 by Jeremy Paden

Not all severing is a grace, sometimes
fruit is picked too soon for it to ripen.
And not all severing strips another
of a future grace, sometimes the pruning knife
turns inward and we cut blindly, sometimes
we know the branch has set its buds
and still against ourselves we cut and cut
and watch detached as the wood falls.
Some cutting is a grace that clears away
the dead, diseased branches that weigh us down,
and the harvest threshing, and the plucking
of berries, can also be. No, not all
severing is a grace, though some might be.
