“Ann’s Owl” by Karen George

I love that I have a friend who calls
out of breath to tell me
that while walking her dog
in a nature preserve, she heard wings
clap air, looked up to see
a three-foot owl land in a nearby tree.

They looked at each other
a full minute before it leapt,
and she followed to where it settled
on a branch further down the path,
several times more before it vanished.

She planned to search her bird book
when home, and I asked her to let me know
what she found, pleased and curious
as if I’d seen the raptor myself.
