“Evening is not Kind to a Morning Dove” by Doug Self

the thud of life bursting off the windshield
was all the answer I needed
I spun the steering wheel around
to check the unintentional victim
stopped got out of the car
knelt caringly and wafted the bird
into my hands

closed my eyes
serendipitous energy wa-whummed
transferring life from the world into the deceased
wings flapping coos cooing it flew away

I stood there grinning
half Steve Irwin half Jesus
still driving still smiling
still believing my day dream
next time I thought
next time
