“The Naming of Babes is a Difficult Matter” by Sherry Chandler

In the 1940s when I was born
Sherry stood 97th in the list of 200 names for girls:
32,748 mothers named their daughters Sherry.
Mary was number 1.
339,928 mothers named their daughters Mary.
Sherry is a diminutive of Charlotte.
Charlotte is a feminine form of Charles.
Charles is the English version of Carl,
and Carl means “man” or “husband.”
Husband in this case no doubt means
“freeholder” or “man with a house.”
As Charlotte does not.
Charlotte, Carlotta, Carla could not be freeholders.
They could only be woman
as Sherry can only be girl
or maybe the little woman
or Sherry baby (I dare you).
